Summer Furnace Maintenance Tips

We know that “summer furnace” might seem like two words that shouldn’t ever be side-by-side in a sentence together. However, furnace maintenance is actually a good thing to be thinking about during the summer–especially in Colorado when that first cool day can sneak up on you!

It’s better to give 5 minutes of your time right now to thinking about furnace maintenance in the summer so you’re not left googling “furnace repair near me” when you least expect it. Doing so will help ensure that your heating system is in fine working order on that first chilly “summer” day of the season. Here are a couple of things that you can do to make sure your furnace will be ready.

Perform Routine Homeowner Maintenance

DIY furnace maintenance tasks should be on every homeowner’s list. Here are some basic maintenance duties you can take yourself.

  • Make sure there’s a new, clean air filter in place.
  • Remove any summer equipment that might be cluttering the space around the furnace.
  • Clean the area around the outdoor unit. For example, if the grass has grown high, mow it down. If dust and dirt have accumulated, you can gently hose it down when the system is off.

Schedule Maintenance

When you’re checking the local forecast and see that a cold spell is coming up, that’s a great time to schedule your annual tune-up (bi-annual tune-ups are necessary if you own a heat pump). Ideally, maintenance is scheduled just before the cooling season starts but in Colorado, just exactly when the cooling season begins can be unpredictable.

That’s why it’s perfect to schedule it when the first spate of cold weather is due. You’ll be able to rest assured knowing this critical service has been taken care of. During maintenance, we’ll perform a thorough inspection of your furnace, get a jump on any potential problems you might experience when you first turn it on and make sure that your furnace is ready to see you through the end of summer, fall, and winter.

Schedule Those Repairs

How well was your furnace holding up at the end of the last heating season? If you know that the answer is “not so well,” then you probably also have a good idea of what was going wrong.

Was your furnace not heating your home very well? Was it making unusual noises? Perhaps there were pockets of cold air throughout the main living spaces of your home. If you suspect that once you turn it on, it’s not going to heat your home well, now’s the perfect time to get a jump on any repairs.

The most important tip for summer furnace maintenance is to get any necessary repairs done. The end of summer is a much better time for furnace repairs so you can avoid a furnace emergency in the middle of a cold spell. That’s also when our technicians are at the ready to take care of any suspected furnace issues.
