The Truth About Your AC’s Compressor

Summer is just around the corner and we’ll bet you’re excited to enjoy the hot weather. However, there’s nothing that’ll throw a wrench in your enjoyment of warmer temperatures than an AC that’s on the fritz.

There are numerous repair issues that’ll spring up in the life of an AC. This is especially true if you don’t keep up on those annual tune-ups (twice a year if you have a heat pump or mini split). When you think about how hard your AC works, it’s inevitable that such a workhorse will eventually succumb to issues such as a refrigerant leak, a failed capacitor, or a broken part. Luckily, these are fairly easy fixes for an experienced HVAC team such as ours.

However, there’s one AC problem that’s more feared among homeowners and that’s a broken down compressor. When you realize that the compressor is essentially the heart of your AC, when this part becomes damaged or breaks down, it can mean certain death for your AC. Let’s dive into whether you need AC compressor repair or a system replacement.

The Compressor Is the Most Expensive Air Conditioner Part

The aptly named compressor is responsible for compressing the refrigerant within an air conditioning system. As the most important, most complicated part of your AC, the compressor is very costly to replace. That’s why you may be advised to replace the entire AC system instead of fixing the compressor.

It helps to look at your AC system as a whole, considering its age and performance. Is your system in the 10-15 year range where it’s likely to need to be replaced soon anyway? If so, why not replace it? You can always count on our honest option on whether it makes more economic sense to seek out a system upgrade.

If your system is newer and is under warranty, then the decision is easy for you. If the compressor is under warranty, then you won’t have to pay to have it repaired or replaced, you’ll only need to pay for the labor needed for the job. However, it’s unlikely the compressor will go out on a newish system.

How To Know If You Have a Bad Compressor

There are a few obvious signs that something is wrong with the AC’s compressor. The biggest sign is when you aren’t receiving enough cool air. Your AC system requires that the refrigerant flowing into the evaporator coils be under very high pressure. When this fails to happen, then your AC can’t cool the air down fast enough which leads to a whole host of additional problems.
