If there’s anything we don’t want our customers to do this fall and winter, it’s sitting around wondering if their heating system is going to allow them to stay comfortable all season long without suddenly breaking down on them.
Of course, if you keep up on your maintenance sessions, this is a lot less likely to happen! Maintenance allows your furnace system to work as efficiently and effectively as possible for as long as possible. When we maintain your system, we thoroughly clean it, inspect it for signs of wear and tear, and adjust components that need it.
This all actually helps prevent repair needs. Still, it’s a good idea to be aware of the signs that you might actually need furnace repairs, in case a repair need does crop up in between tune-ups. Read on as we uncover some of the signs of a furnace in disrepair.
Loud or Strange Noises
So what do we define as a loud or strange noise? Pretty much anything that’s outside of the normal operational sounds your furnace makes. You are going to know how your furnace sounds better than anyone, so if anything sounds amiss, it’s not a bad idea to call us.
Here’s just an example of what you might hear, and what the sounds you are hearing mean:
- Buzzing: This can be indicative of an electrical wiring problem. It’s definitely something you want to call for right away as not only does this threaten the furnace itself, but it could be a safety issue.
- Clicking: If you always hear a slight and short-lived series of clicks as your furnace cycles on and off, you could be hearing your ductwork fluctuate with the change of temperature as air goes through it. But alternatively, you can be hearing the heat exchanger expand and contract. And this is bad news because it likely means that the heat exchanger is cracked and is potentially letting out harmful amounts of CO (carbon monoxide).
Whether you hear these two sounds or anything else that seems suspicious, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.
Higher Than Average Utility Bills
Of course, your energy bills are going to be a little higher in the winter–after all, we use our heating systems a lot here in the Peyton area. And our HVAC systems actually account for half of all our energy use.
But what we want you to be aware of is how high those bills are. Are they drastically higher than what they were this same time last year, despite comparable use? Or how about when you compare your bills to what your neighbors are paying?
If your energy bills are a lot higher, it’s a sign that something in your home is working inefficiently. It could very well be your furnace, and it could be due to the fact that it needs repairs and is working inefficiently as a result.
